Recently, Pittsburgh Law Firm Carlson Lynch filed a class action for unfair competition and consumer warranty against NBTY Inc., for the selling and promotion of their Radiance Ginkgo Biloba 120 mg product. This Ginko Biloba Class Action was stemmed due to the product being advertised as containing biloba extract that "supports memory and mental focus," while in reality there is no scientific evidence supporting the fact that the biloba ingredient is effective in the improvement of cognitive health. To note, ginkgo biloba is the only living species in the division Ginkgophyta, all others being extinct. It is found in fossils dating back 270 million years. Native to China, the tree is widely cultivated and was introduced early to human history. It has various uses in traditional medicine and as a source of food. The genus name Ginkgo is regarded as a misspelling of the Japanese gin kyo, "silver apricot". Our take on the product? If something has lasted this long, you're bound to believe its kooky-wives-taled-claims. Often times the species is advertised as a cognitive booster, bringing one's mind to greater heights and abilities, however, as addressed in the complaint, there isn't much scientific evidence to prove this. After some research Consider The Consumer has also found that extracts of Ginkgo biloba leaf have been studied as a possible treatment for dementia and Alzheimer's disease, with mixed results. Some reviews have concluded there is no good evidence supporting the use of ginkgo in dementia, whereas others have concluded that gingko extract may help people with dementia. Further, there are claims but no good evidence supporting the use of ginkgo for treating high blood pressure, menopause-related cognitive decline, tinnitus, post-stroke recovery, peripheral arterial disease, macular degeneration, or altitude sickness. The little support for the claims we do have, however, is through user's testimony, which varies, quite unsteadily, on both sides of the spectrum (See Amazon Reviews for the product). There have been numerous Ginko Biloba class action lawsuits in the previous years, some that have even surrounded NBTY's former company, Nature's Bounty.
