If you had to pick a “good” time for your washing machine or clothes dryer to be on its last legs or even beyond repair, now’s as good a moment as any—the Black Friday deals on washers and dryers have already begun. “Black Friday started earlier this month as retailers compete for business,” says Mark Allwood, a senior market analyst at Consumer Reports. With new models hitting stores in the first half of 2018, retailers are eager to sell existing inventory. “Even washers and dryers that debuted this year will probably be marked down now as retailers make room for the new ones,” Allwood says.  Matching washer-and-dryer sets remain a popular pick. You can buy these appliances separately, of course, but if you’re set on a pair, choose your washer first. “The washer does most of the work and is a more complicated machine,” says Emilio Gonzalez, the engineer who oversees our tests of laundry appliances. “All dryers will dry your laundry, eventually, but vary in how long it takes, affecting the energy used. But not all washers do a good job cleaning.” Ads were searched to find sets on sale that offer impressive performance. Here are some Black Friday washer and dryer deals to consider.

Best Buy, Home Depot, and Lowe’s

Major retailers are matching prices in some cases. Lowe’s throws in a $50 gift card that you can use at its store. Think of all the laundry detergent you can buy. Here are some matching sets to consider that are on sale now. LG WT7600HWA High-Efficiency Top-Loader, $750, and LG DLEX7600WE Electric Dryer, $700 Each usually costs around $1,000, so you’re saving $550. The washer’s claimed capacity of 5.2 cubic feet means you’ll be able to wash your king-size comforter. Our tests have found that a king comforter will fit in any washer with a capacity of more than 4.5 cubic feet. Cleaning is very good, and the dryer is excellent at its job and among the quietest we tested. And if what you really want is a front-loader, look at the LG WM3670HWA and its matching dryer, DLEX3370W. They’re marked down from $1,600 to $1,300 for the pair. Samsung WF45K6500AW front-loader and Samsung DV45K6500EW Electric Dryer, $700 Each That’s $400 off the usual price for the set. The washer does an excellent job cleaning, the dryer is very good at its job, and both are relatively quiet. There’s a small door in the washer, known as AddWash, that allows you to add a garment after the wash cycle has begun. Wash times are long, however, which is true for most front-loaders. Try the Super Speed option to save time without sacrificing cleaning. Samsung FlexWash WV60M9900AV and Samsung FlexDry DVE60M9900V, $1,300 Each Each appliance cost $1,700 earlier this autumn, so it’s good to see the price dropping on this innovative set. They’re still expensive, however, but the FlexWash is one machine, two washers. Same for the dryer. See “3 of the Most Innovative Matching Washer & Dryer Pairs From CR’s Laundry Lab” for more details on this impressive set. Whirlpool WFW75HEFW Front-Loader and Whirlpool WED75HEFW Electric Dryer, $600 Each These recently cost around $720, and, now at $600, the front-loader costs less than some agitator top-loaders we tested. The washer aced our cleaning tests and is gentle on fabrics, but it’s relatively noisy and wash time is 95 minutes if you use the normal-wash/heavy-soil setting. Use the normal-soil setting and you’ll save time. The dryer gets the job done without making a racket.

Sears

You’ll find the LG and Samsung sets called out above on sale at Sears, too, and take a look at these Kenmore sets. These deals start at 6 p.m. Thanksgiving Day, and prices increase after 2 p.m. Friday. Kenmore 22242 Agitator Top-Loader and Kenmore 62342 Electric Dryer, $350 Each It’s tough to find a good washer or dryer for less than $400. But this Kenmore has dropped in price recently, down from $720, and is one of the top-performing models among the 31 agitator top-loaders in our ratings. It does a good job cleaning and is among the most water-efficient in its group. Wash time is a brisk 40 minutes using the normal-wash/heavy-soil setting and faster if you use the normal-soil setting. The dryer is very good at its job. Both machines are noisy, however. And similar to most agitators, this one isn’t so gentle on fabrics. The price of each appliance increases by $20 after 2 p.m. Friday. Kenmore 41262 Front-Loader and Kenmore 81182 Electric Dryer, $450 Each Front-loaders are the most expensive washer type, and you won’t find many for less than $600. The original price of this washer was around $940, and it has dropped several times in recent months. It does a very good job cleaning and is gentle on fabrics. Water and energy efficiency are superb. The dryer aced its job, and both machines are relatively quiet. The price goes up $50 for each appliance after 2 p.m. Friday. Some prices we’ve seen are appealing, but performance isn’t, so be sure to check CR’s washer and dryer ratings before you choose, look at our brand reliability information, and read “The Best Matching Washers and Dryers” for more choices.
