Ditch the cheap bottle of Andre at your next Summer outing and opt for something that'll pop a bit more. No need to open the wallet too wide, though, as your local supermarket is now likely to carry the "good stuff." European grocery chain, Lidl, which is slowly spanning the United States, was just awarded the prestigious International Wine & Spirits competition's "Silver Outstanding" honor for its Cremant de Bourgogne Blanc NV. An incredibly fancy name, for a price you'll fancy incredibly: just $10. As a refresher, Crémant wines, like the Cremant de Bourgogne Blanc NV, often share a shelf with Champagnes as both are sparkling whites that are fermented through a similar process. Crémants, however, are slightly less bubbly - though there personality is just fine. In addition, our wine expert (okay, she just drinks a lot of wine...), tells me that Crémants, unlike French Champagnes, can be produced in several French regions, including Bordeaux, Jura, Limoux, Die, Alsace, the Loire Valley and Burgundy, whereas Champagnes must come from the...you guessed it! The Champagne Region of France. Our friends at InsideHook tell us that Lidl describes their award-winning Crémant as “dry with plenty of flavor,” with a lingering finish. As far as Crémants go, don’t expect a nose-tingling experience. Think less bubbly than the champagne you might be used to. For comparison sake, a bottle of Veuve Clicquot 2008 — a French Champagne — also earned the Silver Outstanding award, but often sells from $60-$70, easily. Similarly, you'll be happy to hear that an $8 bottle of Rosé from Aldi was also named one of the best in the world. Go figure. Supermarkets are where it's at. Cheers, folks. And remember to enjoy responsibly.
