Recently, Blue Bunny and Publix Super Markets have recalled ice cream products due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that may cause serious (sometimes fatal) infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may be affected by short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. According to Blue Bunny, only Hoppin’ Holidoodle ice cream with the following lot numbers and best if used by dates are included in this recall. The recalled product is a seasonal holiday flavor with very limited geographic distribution in six states. Consumers should check the side of their ice cream packages to check for the following lot numbers and best if used by dates: UPC 070640014644 LOT 60001 MM 19115 6228 BEST IF USED BY 02/13/18 UPC 070640014651 (High altitude) LOT 60001 MM 19115 6229 BEST IF USED BY 02/14/18 The ice cream sold at Publix stores in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee, and North Carolina with a UPC of 000-41415-03843, and a sell by date of May 27, 2017, which is printed on the bottom of the half gallon container, are the containers in question. Both instances are part of a series of recalls involving ice cream made with cookie dough pieces supplied by Aspen Hills, Inc. Aspen Hills, Inc. also provides cookie dough for the touted Blue Bell ice cream brand, which has also recalled numerous products recently due to the same Listeria outbreak, and have recently expanded these actions. The expanded Blue Bell recall includes the following products in half gallons and pints: Blue Bell Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Blue Bell Cookie Two Step sold to retail outlets, and three gallon flavors sold to food service accounts including Blue Bell Blue Monster, Blue Bell Chocolate Chip Cookie, and Blue Bell Krazy Kookie Dough. These products were produced from February 2, 2016 through September 7, 2016. To date, their have not been any reported cases off illness due to this mishap. Consumers, though, are directed to throw the ice cream out, and contact retailers for a refund if desired.
